Happy birthday Noel Gallagher

Noel David Thomas Gallagher was born on Monday, May 29th, 1967 in Longsight Manchester, United Kingdom, however he grew up in the streets of Burnage in a childhood often deemed as difficult and unhappy.

Noel Gallagher arrived to the music industry in a less than glamorous fashion; he worked as a roadie for Inspiral Carpets during the late 1980’s. It wasn’t until the early 1990’s when he made contact with his brother’s project The Rain and agreed to take creative control of the band as songwriter.

In 1993, Noel Gallagher met Alan McGee in Scotland and managed to get a record deal for the band, now under the name Oasis. From this point, the creation of Britpop as we know it had officially begun although Noel would not be the only responsible of crafting this genre, he just joined other musicians who were already working on it, like Damon Albarn, Richard Ashcroft, Graham Coxon, Jarvis Cocker, Tim Booth among others. All of them habitually met in Camden (London) for pub shows or just for hanging out.

It is impossible to look back at the 1990’s without finding a strong reference to Oasis’ albums. Noel Gallagher’s creations became classics of an era of really good music in both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. While ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Campagne Supernova’, ‘Live Forever’ and ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ are often acknowledged as Gallagher’s finest works, it is widely known among experts that some of his more brilliant pieces can be found in b-sides (‘Sad Song’, ‘Stay Young’, ‘The Masterplan’, ‘Half The World Away’). Even his Beatles covers are praised by those who follow him; his acoustic renditions of ‘Help’ and ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ are particularly respected.

Oasis is not a band anymore and the Gallagher brothers have gone separate ways. Noel is the frontman of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and recently showed the world, especially young audiences that Britpop (Post-Britpop or Alternative Rock, whatever you want to call it), although not trendy right now, is still a dazzling option for those looking for fine guitar playing and melodious vocals.
