According to The Telegraph, Bergoglio chose the name of Francis after St. Francis of Assisi, which could carry some symbolism, as St. Francis committed himself to a life of poverty and is seen as one of Catholicism’s reforming figures, however, St. Francis never ordained to the catholic priesthood according to Wikipedia.

The new leader of catholics has already addressed his believers:

First and foremost I would like to pray for our emeritus Pope Benedict XVI that Christ and the Madonna watch over him.

Let us being this journey together, this journey for the Roman Catholic Church. It’s a journey of friendship and love and faith between us. Let us pray for one another, let us pray for all the world: Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

In the past, Bergoglio has expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage and adoption by homosexuals, calling it an act of discrimination against children.
