And the Ballon d’Or goes to… Messi! (yes, once again!)

In your face Cristiano Ronaldo!

Once again, Lionel Andrés Messi received tonight at Zurich the Ballon d’Or™ awarded by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (“FIFA”).  The Argentine star figured in the shortlist for the award along with teammate Xavi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It’s a huge pleasure to win the third time, a big honour. I want to thank the teammates, players and coaches that voted for me. I want to thank my Barcelona and Argentina teammates, without them this would have been impossible. But most of all, I want to share the award with Xavi: you deserve this as much as I do: Lionel Messi.

Teammates above all!

Messi has won this award on 2009 and 2010… that’s three times in a row! A “hat-trick” if you will.  He’s not the first player who has earned the award three times; he has joined other football legends like Cruyff, van Basten and Platini who was the first one to do it uninterruptedly.

With 211 goals[1] in 297 appearances (since 2004) with F.C. Barcelona, “La Pulga” (as he is nicknamed for his small stature) is beyond any doubt the most renowned player of our times.

January 9th, 2012.
