The ‘Harry Potter’ film series (eight parts) is the highest grossing film series of all time, with $7.6 billion in worldwide receipts. Neither the books (by J.K. Rowling), nor the films have been mentioned in this blog before as I recall, however, being a worldwide phenomenon, it is only fair we take a look at an interesting fact.
Harry Potter (main character) is not the favourite character among the series fans. Severus Snape is. According to The Guardian, the poll conducted by the books’ publisher, Bloomsbury, reveals Snape got 20% of the 70,000 votes cast.
Severus Snape is portrayed in the film series by English actor Alan Rickman (‘Love Actually’, and ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’). Snape is first presented as a Potions teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Later in the series, he fulfills his wish to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts to ultimately become Headmaster of the school in the final part of the novel.
Snape’s role is crucial throughout the series. The character is complex as it is unpredictable, but if you want to know more about it, I think you ought to read the books, or maybe just watch the films (yes, all eight of them, good luck with that!).
Hermione Granger (portrayed in the films by Emma Watson) was the second favourite character among the fans who took part in the poll.
