It wasn’t easy, but the Red Devils defeated Valencia at the Estadi de Mestalla in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Both sides exercised caution as the game’s bright opening ebbed away, and little changed as the second half started.
Javier Hernández (a.k.a. ‘Chicharito’) scored the only goal of the match with five minutes remaining, saving the day for Manchester United. To score, Hernández took a clever assist from fellow replacement Federico Macheda and fired in.
Watch the goal here:
Valencia grew frustrated as the final minutes slipped away, and left the field without anything to show for their efforts.
Sir Alex Ferguson, United boss said:
I think what Hernandez did was he brought in penetration. There was a moment before he scored his goal where made a great run in behind them, and that’s what we needed at that stage of the game.
For the next fixture, Manchester United will receive Bursaspor at Old Trafford. The Red Devils lead group C with 4 points.
