Uruguay and Mexico progress to round of 16

Bafana-Bafana and Les Bleus out of the tournament

Uruguay defeated Mexico 1-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium (Rustemburg).  The South American squad now advances as leader to the next round with two victories.  Although a draw would have been enough for both teams to progress, La Celeste fought hard to earn the three points.  Luis Suarez scored the only goal of the game after 43 minutes.

Mexico with a miserable performance also progressed to the last 16 by means of a superior goal difference to hosts South Africa who are now eliminated despite their victory against the French squad.

Les Bleus head home without winning a game at the tournament only four years after they lost to Italy on penalties in the final.

Uruguay did not concede a single goal in the group phase and will face Greece or South Korea next Saturday; Mexico on the other hand, will stumble upon an old foe: Argentina.

None of the first team’s strikers have scored for Mexico yet in this FIFA Wold Cup™ while Gonzalo Higuain (ARG) pulled a hat-trick in the match against South Korea.

At this point, it seems feasible that Uruguay will advance to the quarter-finals.  Mexico has now a chance for a rematch against Argentina who ousted them in the last 16 in 2006 by courtesy of Maxi Rodriguez who scored a superb goal from outside the box.
